Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. While a small child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford was interested in acting during her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she was not a fit. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but at the time, she had already made her debut on television in a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
